The seven elements.

Why spaces feel the way they feel.

A space that truly works is not the result of one good decision. It is the result of many small ones, made in the right order, with the right understanding of how people actually live.

We have spent years studying what separates a room that feels right the moment you walk in from one that never quite settles. The answer is never a single element. It is always the relationship between them.

Layout is the element people notice least when it is right, and most when it is not. Light shapes everything before a single material is chosen. Materials carry memory, of the tree they came from, of the hands that shaped them, of the years that have made them more beautiful. These are not decorative considerations. They are structural.

Colour anchors mood in ways you feel before you name it. Acoustics shape the feeling of a space as profoundly as its appearance, yet they are rarely considered until the room is already finished. Air determines whether you exhale or hold your breath.

Plants and nature bring something into a room that no object can replace: the sense that something is alive. That time is passing. That the world outside has found a way in.

These seven elements are what we design with. Not as a checklist. As a way of understanding a space.

Layout, A good layout is something you do not notice.
01 · LAYOUT

A good layout is something you do not notice.

The floor plan determines how people move through a space, and whether that happens naturally or not. You only feel that everything is right: that you land somewhere when you come home, that light and space are where they should be, that the day unfolds without resistance.

Layout is the most structural of all seven elements. It is decided first and changed last. We start here, because the quality of every other element depends on getting this one right.

02 · LIGHT

Light is the first design decision.

Before any choice of material or colour, there is light. It determines how a space feels at every moment of the day: how materials come alive, how colours shift, how you move through a room without thinking about it.

We design with the light that is already there, and enhance it where it matters. That means understanding where it enters, how it changes from morning to evening, and what it does to every surface in between. A space that works with its light feels different at eight in the morning than it does at eight in the evening, and both feel right.

Lighting is part of this too. How a space is lit in the evening is as considered as how it receives daylight in the morning. Warm, dimmable light that follows the rhythm of the day, brighter and cooler when focus is needed, softer and warmer as the day winds down. In a home this shapes how you unwind. In a workplace it shapes how people think and sustain their energy. Lighting is not a finishing touch. It is a design decision made at the start.

Materials, Materials do not diminish with use. They deepen.
03 · MATERIALS

Materials do not diminish with use. They deepen.

Concrete, wood, linen, stone, steel. Materials with their own character that respond to light, to touch, to the passing of years. A scratch, a patina, a faded edge: proof that life is being lived.

The materials we choose determine not only how a space looks, but how it sounds, how it feels underfoot and to the hand, and how it behaves as time passes. Good materials improve. They carry the memory of a space and everyone who has moved through it.

04 · COLOUR

Colour is mood, depth and direction.

Colour is not decoration. It shapes the atmosphere of a room, its sense of depth, and the way it guides you through it. We work with colours drawn from nature, from earth, stone, wood and light, that sit alongside the materials in the space without competing with them.

Colours that do not demand attention but shape how a space feels. That shift with the light, and deepen as the day moves on. A room with the wrong colour palette never quite settles, however well everything else is considered.

Acoustics, Sound is the most underestimated element.
05 · ACOUSTICS

Sound is the most underestimated element.

The difference between a space that restores and one that drains you often lies in how sound behaves. Soft materials, volume, the balance between hard and soft: they determine whether a space feels quiet without feeling empty.

Still enough to land. Open enough to live. Acoustics are rarely mentioned in design conversations, yet they are what separates a room that gives you rest from one that slowly takes it away. We consider them from the beginning.

06 · AIR

Good air is invisible. Its effect is not.

How a space feels has everything to do with what you cannot see. Ceiling height, sightlines, the connection between inside and outside: they determine whether you relax the moment you enter, or only notice it when you leave.

Air quality, ventilation, and the way a room breathes are as important as anything you can touch or see. A room with good air does not call attention to itself. It simply makes you feel clear-headed, unhurried, at ease.

Scent is part of that. Of all the senses, smell reaches the brain most directly, bypassing the usual filters and landing immediately in the part of us that stores emotion and memory. A room that smells of wood, of earth, of water nearby, of linen warmed by sun, does something to the body before any conscious thought has formed. We use natural materials partly for this reason. They do not just look and feel right. They smell right too.

07 · PLANTS & NATURE

Nature is a participant, not a decoration.

Nature is not a backdrop. It is present, moves, grows, changes with the seasons. A plant in a room sets something in motion that is hard to name but immediately felt: life, rhythm, a quiet connection to something beyond the interior itself.

We design with nature as a participant. Views outside, plants that give a room character, the shadow of leaves on a wall. These are not styling decisions. They are decisions about how a space will feel to live in, day after day, season after season.

We bring this same thinking to every project, for every client.
